The KLM Open has teed off but there’s still a finishing stretch to come

The KLM Open is underway, but the opening round of the tournament will have to be completed tomorrow. Thunderstorms and strong winds halted play for too long, meaning many players were unable to finish their 18 holes.

That strong winds would play a major role today was widely expected by all experts. The course was forecast to be a stern test for the tour professionals, and most agreed that high scores were inevitable.

However, Frenchman Julien Guerrier was one of the exceptions who didn’t seem bothered. He recorded seven birdies and just one bogey across his 18 holes.

His secret? Even he struggled to explain it.

“I mainly tried to hit fairways first, and from there the greens, which are tricky here because of the slopes. The conditions weren’t great, and you simply can’t control everything. To give you an example: normally I hit my 7-iron 170 meters, but today on some holes it was 120 meters.”

Guerrier was almost finished with his round when officials pulled all players off the course due to approaching thunderstorms.

“That’s never nice when you only have one hole left to play. But I was in a good position, so it was a bit easier to accept. I then stayed fully focused to finish that last difficult hole.”

Dream come true

After an incomplete first round, fewer than 30 of the 155 players are under par. Joost Luiten is among them. He played early in the morning, when rain showers and strong winds were already battering the course and the players.

But Luiten kept his cool (read more here) and currently sits on -2, four shots behind Guerrier, inside the top 10.

Another player under par is 16-year-old Pieter Werner. The amateur only recently became Dutch U22 champion, earning one of the final spots in the KLM Open. “A dream come true, sooner than expected,” he said enthusiastically.

The high school student started his very first KLM Open in style, making a birdie on the opening hole followed by a solid par on the second.

He will resume his round tomorrow, but tonight he is likely to sleep very well. Whatever happens this week, this is an experience he will never lose.

The first round will resume tomorrow at 07:30. Tee times for the second round will be pushed back by 2 hours and 50 minutes.
