In pouring rain, Lars van der Vight also makes the cut: four Dutchmen through

The players who had to finish their second round this morning weren’t lucky with the weather. In the pouring rain, Dutchman Lars van der Vight earned high praise. With a birdie and a par, he impressively secured his place in rounds 3 and 4.

The good news for this morning’s players: there was no wind. The bad news: the rain came down in torrents during the remainder of round two, which couldn’t be completed yesterday.

But unlike thunderstorms or strong winds that prevent balls from staying on the green—as already happened earlier in the tournament—rain alone isn’t a reason to suspend play. So several players, including some Dutchmen, had to fight for a spot in the weekend rounds.

Yesterday, three Dutch players (Daan Huizing, Darius van Driel, and Lars van Meijel) secured their place in the second half of the tournament. This morning, Lars van der Vight joined them. The 22-year-old from Brabant, in his rookie year as a professional tour player, had two holes left to play. Standing right on the cutline, he gave himself a bit of breathing room with a birdie on hole 8. On the final hole, he got into serious trouble but recovered brilliantly. On both holes, he sank long putts to save his score.
