Luiten Battles Through as He and Van der Vight Make the Cut at the KLM Open

There was no shortage of golf at the KLM Open today. Under sunny skies, play continued from early morning until late evening as players worked to make up for the time lost yesterday. Unfortunately, it was not a particularly productive day for the Dutch contingent, with a maximum of three players, including Joost Luiten, set to make the cut.

A small portion of the second round still needs to be completed on Saturday morning, but it is already clear that many of the fifteen Dutch starters will be heading home after two rounds. Twelve are certain to miss the cut, and possibly thirteen, although that will be determined tomorrow morning.

A Positive Result for Van der Vight

The only Dutch player already guaranteed a place in the weekend is Lars van der Vight. After an excellent opening round of three-under par, the young player from Brabant gave a couple of shots back on Friday with a second-round 74 (+2), but he remains under par for the tournament at one-under overall.

Friday proved far more challenging for Joost Luiten. Starting the day at two-under par, the tournament ambassador did not tee off until late afternoon and struggled throughout his second round. Very little seemed to go his way, and on several occasions he could only shake his head in frustration.

Over his first fourteen holes, Luiten failed to make a single birdie while dropping two shots. It was not until the par-five 15th that he finally found some relief, making birdie to move back under par for the tournament.

It became not only a race to make the cut, but also a race against the clock, with play scheduled to be suspended at 8:45 p.m.

Luiten’s group, which included Connor Syme and Jayden Schaper, managed to reach the 18th tee just before the suspension. That allowed them to complete their round despite the horn already having sounded to signal the end of play. Otherwise, all three would have been forced to return early on Saturday morning to play a single hole. Luiten successfully held on over the closing holes to keep his score under par and secure his place above the projected cut line.

A Chance for Ruiter

Amateur Neville Ruiter could still join that select group of Dutch players tomorrow. His second round was suspended before completion on Friday, but by that point he had recovered a significant amount of ground. The cut line is expected to fall at level par, and with only a handful of holes remaining, that target remains within reach for Ruiter.

The gap between the Dutch players and the top of the leaderboard has already become substantial. Daniel Hillier and Kazuma Katsuragawa currently share the lead at seven-under par, having both completed all 36 holes. Close behind them are several players on similar scores, although they will need to return on Saturday morning to finish their second rounds.

Weekend in Sight

The second round will be completed on Saturday morning, after which the third round will begin immediately at 10:00 a.m. With improved weather conditions forecast and a tightly packed leaderboard, the KLM Open is shaping up for an exciting weekend finale at The International.
