Ruud Gullit Opens KLM Open with a “Spectacular Drive”

Tournament director Ruud Gullit took the very first shot of the KLM Open 2025 early this morning (07:15 AM). With many eyes on him, the former footballer launched a blistering drive straight down the middle of the fairway. “I can feel your disappointment,” Gullit joked to the crowd.

This year, Gullit shares the tournament director role with sporting director Daan Slooter, describing his own title as “Director of Vibes.” His enthusiasm for golf is boundless.

Traditionally, the KLM Open is opened by an honorary starter. Last year, Marco van Basten had the honor of hitting the first ball; this year, that role belonged to Gullit. Was he nervous? “Actually, not really. I’ve been playing a lot lately and I’m in good form—that helps.”

A relaxed Gullit entertained the curious early birds gathered on the 1st tee. “Here we go,” he shouted, after giving the DP World Tour announcer a gentle nudge to wake up. “I’ll just wait until my name is called.”

With all eyes and cameras on him, Gullit then delivered a world-class shot, and his first words after were: “Any questions? I can feel your disappointment,” the Amsterdam native quipped, before posing for fans and speaking to the media. And was he happy with his shot? “It felt amazing—the ball split the fairway. Couldn’t have gone better.”

Ten minutes after Gullit’s official opening, the first of 156 players—including 16 Dutchmen—teed off for their opening round.
